Quote: “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” — IT technicians worldwide
Curaçao is a Dutch Caribbean island just off the northern coast of Venezuela which is one of Caribbean’s best kept secrets. Known for its beautiful sandy beaches, picturesque coves and colorful coral reefs that teem with marine life, it is a sister island of Aruba (a popular Caribbean destination of its own) and Bonaire. Together, the three islands are often referred to as the ABC islands.
With the past year being so busy for us, we were looking to celebrate our 16th wedding anniversary in a special way. Not only were we looking for a romantic setting but we wanted something secluded so that we could really unwind and be able to focus on one another. We also wanted something tropical where we could be guaranteed little rain and lots of sunshine.
Curacao was our chosen anniversary destination and our choice for accommodations was the Baoase Luxury Resort. The Baoase Luxury Resort offered perfection. It was a place that was calm and peaceful. It offered everything you could want for a romantic luxurious getaway.
For many of us, it isn’t always easy taking off from everything and going on a trip out of the country. There are so many responsibilities to take care of to ensure you can have “peace of mind” while away. However, the quote at the top of the page, although often used humorously, actually has a much deeper meaning: we should not underestimate the importance of being able to unwind and take a break to reconnect with our loved ones. This allows us to refocus on our sources of motivation and encouragement that drive us to work hard and better ourselves every day. Focusing on the things that we have is just as important, if not more so, than the importance of working towards the things that we still desire.
When we made our reservations, we found the Baoase resort staff to be extremely courteous and willing to make sure that our stay with them was nothing less than extraordinary.
One service that really stood out to us was the resort’s VIP airport service. When we arrived at the Curacao airport, we gathered our bags and departed the plane. Inside, was a gentleman holding a sign with the resort’s name and our surname on it. He introduced himself and assisted with getting our luggage from baggage claim. He then guided us to the exit lanes where we were able to skip the long lines and zip right through Customs and exit the airport within minutes. The driver that the resort staff had arranged to transport us, pulled up along the curb and we were on our way!
A group of smiling faces greeted us as our driver pulled up to the resort. We were given a warm welcome and also met the person who made our reservation, Jackie. We were then introduced to Ray, (who by the way wears absolutely GREAT smelling cologne), who proceeded with taking us on the tour of the property.
He brought us to the beach bar where the staff had refreshing frozen citrus beverages blended with mint leaves waiting on us to sip as we toured the property.
There was a peacefulness of the resort that washed over us and the beautiful turquoise ocean was simply amazing.
When we reached the accommodations the staff had for us, there was a beautiful bouquet of flowers waiting for me that my husband and the hotel staff had arranged beforehand. The staff had also prepared a delightfully tasty-looking welcome platter.
We immediately fell in love with our beachfront superior suite. It offered exactly what we were looking for, plus a little more.
The high ceilings and wide door entries gave the suite such a grand feeling.
The suite was spacious and offered breathtaking views.
It included a private open air bath area with a rain shower and hand crafted stone bathtub.
There were two patios. One included an outdoor dining area, a minibar and a flat screen tv and the other patio included an outdoor sitting area.
When we opened the patio doors, we were amazed by what we found to be our own private oasis. We had our own infinity pool, a garden and the steps from our patio led us to our own secluded beach with access into the ocean.
The Baoase Culinary Beach Restaurant
On our actual anniversary night, the restaurant on the property, Baoase Culinary Beach Restaurant, set us up with a private romantic gazebo dinner on the beach.
The gazebo was decorated with flowers, curtains and there were fireballs lit around the number “16” written in the sand with a heart around it. The soft music and the ambiance could not have been more perfect.
We love how this entire resort staff goes above and beyond when it comes to creating an experience for their guests. This, I’m sure, is one of the reasons why they are so highly rated and it’s this type of service that makes guests want to come back again and again.
The executive chef, Rene Klop played a huge part in making our 16th anniversary special with all of the creative tastings and dishes he prepared and introduced us to during our stay.
The lion fish and Belgium chocolate are definitely new favorites of ours and that Langoustine dish served on our anniversary night was incredible!
Off Property Visits
We did step foot off of this beautiful resort one day to experience some of the off-property sites in and around Curacao.
The resort arranged for us to spend a day with Carlos who was a fun, attentive, and knowledgeable tour guide.
Before we headed off on our tour, he told us that “this tour is all about what you want to do,” and he customized our tour to meet a list of our preferences. It was great! In this photo above, Carlos had us to put our arms up and have our hands touch palm to palm. When we looked at the photo after he snapped it, he said the most romantic out of the two of us would notice something special. Of course I spotted it first! Take a look and see if you see it?
We visited beaches, experienced captivating waves and panoramic views at Sheta Boca, and enjoyed a tasty and plentiful Antillean lunch at the famous Jaanchies, which is also known for its iguana tasting experience. Yes, the big lizard, which they prepare and serve stewed.
Jan, the owner of Jaanchies, sat down at our table and conversed with us during our meal. He shared details of their specialty dishes and had a very humorous personality. He made recommendations which accommodated what we liked, and he had the kitchen customize our order just for us.
Another restaurant we visited was Fishalicious and, as you may have guessed, it offers seafood, and is run by a friendly Dutch staff. They had a nice atmosphere and good food, but their service was not as attentive as the other restaurants we visited during our trip. It seemed as if they might have been short-staffed that night as the service was just a bit slower than the other restaurants we experienced. We also discovered that when you ask for tea to drink, it is important to mentioned “ice” tea or they will assume you are referring to their “hot” clear mint tea.
Sarafina is an Italian restaurant we visited, and it was just across the street from Fishalicious. It offered outdoor patio seating and a warm, cozy atmosphere. The owner, Maurice was excellent. We only went for coffee and dessert, but he still made sure we had a pleasant dining experience. We were won over by their delicious chocolate lava cake that oozed with caramel. Those who know me, know that I’m not particularly crazy about chocolate, but this dessert was excellent. The chocolate cake was not as sweet as I expected it to be which really allowed me to enjoy it with the sweetness of the caramel.
We had several people tell us about one other restaurant called The Wine Cellar. We had to make sure to stop by here on our last night in Curacao and we’re so glad we did. Anton, not only was attentive and kind, but he was so down to earth and treated us as if we had known each other for years. The atmosphere was very warm and friendly. There was such a surprising yet joyful moment we witnessed. There was a family sitting at a table near us celebrating a birthday. We saw the staff approach the table to sing “Happy Birthday”. People from other tables joined in and so did we. Once the singing was done, people from other tables began to get up from their tables to go give birthday hugs to the birthday honoree. It was so refreshing to see this type of behavior. These people were complete strangers, were of different nationalities, but they embraced this celebration as if it were their very own. It was beautiful to see. Overall, we found this to be a fantastic restaurant providing excellent service, remarkable food and that memorable birthday moment will forever resonate within our spirits .
With great food, friendly people, adventurous activities, wonderful scenery, and top-notch luxury all in one, Curacao is definitely a place we would return to again. By taking time away from work and our usual surroundings, my husband and I were able to spend hours and hours alone talking about the past, the present, and making plans for the future, all without distractions or looming deadlines. Such a setting is ideal for strengthening the bond of love and mutual respect that often gets drowned out in the noise of life with the passage of time. It’s important to not let that happen, and our 16th anniversary gave us the perfect opportunity to reset the clock and reaffirm our love for one another.
You don’t have to travel far to experience a different culture or to unplug from your usual routine. For our special occasion, the Baoase Luxury Resort in Curacao was our chosen anniversary getaway and we found it to be perfect for what we were seeking. So if you’re looking for a great romantic getaway that offers serenity, where you’ll be pampered and treated with some romantic luxury with your significant other, or if you just want some quiet time to clear your mind and refresh your soul, the Baoase Luxury Resort is definitely one of the top on our list of recommendations.
